Cape Town in South Africa is one of the most exciting cities I have ever been to. It has so much to offer, history, culture, beach life, food and wildlife.
Some of the most famous attractions in Cape Town is Table mountain and Lions head. These are two beautiful mountains shaping the city. You can either climb up Table mountain or you can get there with a cable car.
Cape Town has a lot of great museums worth checking out if you are interested in history, especially about Apartheid.
Wine and tea
If you like wine then wine tasting is definitely something you shouldn’t miss out on if you visit Cape Town. There are a lot of wineries in Constantia which is very close to town or in the town called Stellenbosch. I would especially recommend Waterford located in Stellenbosch. This winery serves wine with matching chocolates.
If you are not into wine, but you like tea I would recommend having afternoon tea at Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. In high season you should book in advance. This hotel is absolutely beautiful. More about the afternoon tea in Cape Town here.
Wildlife
If you love animals then you don’t have travel any further than to the company’s garden located in the middle of the city. The park has hundreds of squirrels and birds. Five minutes out of town you can see zebras walking along Table mountain. A few hour drive and you can go on a safari. The most famous game park is Kruger, but if you don’t have time for a 13 hour drive or a flight then there are a lot of small parks close to Cape Town, like Aquila. The park has animals like lions, giraffes, zebras, water buffalos, rhino’s, elephants etc.
The famous beach
If you visit Cape Town during the summer you should visit Camps Bay, located on the other side of Table mountain. Camps bay is an area where a lot of celebrities live. Along the beach is a lot of nice restaurants. You can either get to Camps Bay by car or bus or you can get there with a red city sightseeing bus.
Cape of good hope
You have probably heard of Cape of good hope. This is a beautiful place which traditionally has been seen as the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. You can either book a guided tour, rent a cab or take the train to get here. On your way you should stop and see Boulders Beach which is famous for its penguins.
Live outside of town
If you prefer to live outside of town then Observatory is definitely the place. This suburb is only three train stops away from the city or ten minutes by car. Observatory is a very bohemian area with hippies and hipsters. This place offers a variety of restaurants and cafes. Koornhoop Manor House is a beautiful guest house that I would recommend. This is a very cute little guesthouse and the owners are very nice.
Great food
Cape Town offers amazing food in both restaurants and food markets. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday the food market Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay is open. Not only does it have great food, but it also has live music and vintage clothing. The neighbourgoods market in Woodstock is open every Saturday, and V&A Market at the Waterfront is open every day.
Here is a little list of restaurants Dear November would recommend in Cape Town:
Hello Sailor – This is probably my favorite restaurant. The food is really good, but the atmosphere is probably why it’s my favorite. This is a very small restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant has a few regular dishes and a chalkboard with dishes that changes all the time. The restaurant also offers vegetarian dishes. The cheesecake and the malva pudding are great desserts.
Obz Café– This restaurant is opposite Hello Sailor. This place has really good pizzas. My favorite is the one with feta, bacon and avocado on it.
Honeybun café – A little café open for breakfast and lunch. It serves sandwiches, wraps, juice and smoothies.
Mango ginger – A café open for breakfast and lunch, serving smoothies, sandwiches, salads, wraps etc.
Queen of Tarts – This is absolutely my favorite café. This café is famous for its cupcakes and tarts. But it also offers breakfast and lunch. My favorite breakfast is the French toast with bacon, banana and syrup. The quiches are great for lunch.
Café Ganesh – If you are interested in African food then this is a great place to try it. The menu is on a chalkboard on the wall and it offers African and vegetarian dishes.
Mama Africa – This restaurant is located in long street in Cape Town. This restaurant offers African dishes, like Kudu steak. The restaurant also has live music.
Lefty’s – This is a well hidden restaurant in Cape Town. The restaurant looks like an old pub which is quite charming and the food is great.
Pancho’s – A Mexican restaurant with enormous portions.
