Aalborg is Denmark’s 4th largest city, located in North-Jutland. The city stands for all things Danish and that is probably why Norwegians love to visit all year round.
Aalborg is a great city to do shopping, see Danish history dating all the way back to the Vikings and eat great Danish cakes and food, like smørrebrød (Danish sandwiches) and flødeboller (chocolate-coated marshmallow).
Shopping
If shopping is your thing Aalborg offers a few different shopping malls, and a great shopping street filled with shops.
Friis shopping mall
Located right next to the shopping street, which makes it easier to get the best of both.
Aalborg stor center (shopping mall)
This mall has a huge supermarket called Bilka. This store is very popular for Norwegians when they are visiting Denmark only for a day because the food is a lot cheaper than in Norway. The mall also has a lot of other stores.
The shopping street
Probably the nicest part of Aalborg, with beautiful architectural sights. This is a very long street with stores selling clothes, sports equipment, toys, shoes, decor, knickknacks, bags and purses etc. The walking street is also filled with cute little cafe’s and restaurants. You should definitely visit one of the shops that sell “flødeboller” and try one; it won’t get much more Danish than this.
Sightseeing
The Franciscan Monastery Museum
This is an underground museum located in the middle of the shopping street. You’ll feel like you are in a Harry Potter movie when entering the museum. The entrance is a see-through elevator that takes you down underground to the monastery dated back to 1250. This is a small, but very well designed and different museum.
Lindholm Høje Museum
This is a museum where you can experience the life and death of the vikings in this area.
Food
Penny Lane (café)
Read about Penny Lane here.
Mortens kro (Restaurant)
Danish food with a gourmet twist.
Duus Vinkjælder (wine basement/restaurant)
This is a cozy restaurant located in a beautiful-looking building in the basement. The building is actually one of Aalborg’s oldest buildings. The restaurant looks like it belongs in the medieval times. You can enjoy lunch and dinner here, both outside and in the basement.
Hos Isidor Henius (restaurant)
This restaurant is known for it smørrebrød (sandwiches). If you would like to try very traditional Danish food then this is the place.
