Honey hearts or Honninghjerter as it is called in Danish is a cake dating back to the 1700s. Many might associate this cake with Christmas today, but it was actually used for more romantic purposes back in the day.
If a boy fancied a girl he might give her a honey heart, and the girls would usually save the scrap pictures from the honey hearts.
People would go to the priest to get engaged, and when doing so the priest would usually have a honey heart that he would tear into two pieces and give them to the couple.
This cake is really quite romantic and a perfect gift for your love on Valentine’s day.
The honey hearts in the pictures are from the old town in Aarhus in Denmark, which is an open air museum showing life in Denmark during the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. Sadly the recipe from the old town is a secret. Honey hearts can be bought all over Denmark, and there are also recipes to be found online.
The cake is usually decorated with angel scrap pictures, and at Christmas it is decorated with Santa scrap pictures.
